Removing harmful bacterial buildup
One of the key components of a dental checkup is the thorough cleaning you’ll receive. Not only does this leave your smile feeling smoother and looking shinier, but it’s also important for preventing tooth decay and gum disease.
When bacteria are able to thrive on the surfaces of your teeth and along your gumline, it can spell disaster for your smile. This bacteria feeds on food debris not completely removed by proper brushing and flossing, and it emits a weak acid that wears away at your tooth enamel. That’s the outermost layer of your teeth, which protects your teeth from decay. When it’s weakened, you become susceptible to cavities.
Similarly, the harmful bacteria can cause an infection of the tissue surrounding your teeth, which is known as gum disease.
Bacterial buildup first takes the form of a sticky film called plaque. Plaque can be easily removed with brushing and flossing. But after roughly 48 hours, plaque hardens and turns into tartar. Tartar, which contributes to bad breath and makes it difficult to keep a clean mouth, can only be safely removed by a dental professional.
These routine visits allow our talented hygienists to thoroughly remove tartar, leaving you with a clean smile!
Preventing major dental problems
While they’re performing a deep cleaning of your teeth, our hygienists will also check for signs of gum disease and tooth decay. These common problems may not seem like a big deal, but if they’re left untreated for too long, they progress into major complications and can eventually lead to tooth loss.
When caught early, addressing tooth decay can be as simple as a tooth filling. We use SonicFill™ to restore the tooth. Your filling will be tooth-colored and made of 84 percent quartz, which lends to its durability. Plus, it’s a quick procedure! It takes less than 10 minutes.
Similarly, when gum disease is caught in its early stages — known as gingivitis — all it generally takes to address it is a minimally invasive cleaning procedure to eradicate the infection. If you wait until the problem has worsened, it can cause gumline recession, which will have to be repaired with a gum graft or other procedure.
